Frequently Asked Questions
What phones will work?
Any working phone will work!
We're not joking. We've gotten phones to work from the 1950-2000's.
Buying New Amazon has lots of options for good prices.
Buying Vintage When shopping for vintage phones do your best to make sure it's buttons, ringer, etc work. It doesn't have to be perfect, just try to find one in good condition & ask the seller if they have tested the phone.
We recommend purchasing phones online that have only been tested.
Those see through phones? Yup.
Old rotary phones? Yup.
Some random phone I find on eBay? Yup.
Got any phone recommendations?
We've found the best way to find a phone is to buy from reputable sellers on eBay. Just make sure to ask them if it's been tested. If it hasn't been tested it's a little bit of a risk, we've had some phones show up not working as we had hoped.
Over the years so many phones were manufactured so search for something that fits you & your family best!
Phone Ideas/Brands
- Western Electric. Tons of variety & lots of mid-century gems.
- Conair Clear Phone. Remember the see through phones? These are it! (Conair also made other fun ones)
- Unisonic. They made some fun big button phones.
- Mickey mouse phones, cow phones, hamburger phones...just get searching & have fun!
My home internet router is in a weird spot, what now?
Not everyone has a home internet router in a convenient location in the home. Some homes have a router in a closet, basement, or living room.
You can pair a WiFi extender like Google Mesh to bring a home internet router anywhere you wish.
The other option is to check out the Wiley Buddy WiFi enabled phones.
What's the difference between Wiley & other internet based home phones like Tin Can?
Wiley is 100% founded, operated, & privately owned. Our mission is to give families a simple & fun way to connect with each other without having the pressure of getting kids a smartphone too early. There's no other agenda - families & kids come first!
One major difference between Wiley and another WiFi home phone service like Tin Can is that Wiley can call any number without requiring you to add contacts to an approved-only list.
By default, Wiley's approved-only calling is turned on, so calls can only be made to numbers on your approved list. Unlike Tin Can, you can toggle this off and allow calls to any number, so you don’t have to constantly manage contacts.
Wiley is a safe phone designed for young children, teens, and even adults. It’s a phone you can give to a young child today and have it grow with them over time. Or maybe you’re an adult who just wants something simpler and less tied to doomscrolling.

Wiley Home Phone service comes with:
Enhanced 911
Assign a physical address to your phone number so if 911 is dialed, first responders automatically know where to go — even if your child can’t say the address.
Instant Emergency Alerts
You and a neighbor can even instantly get an alert when 911 is dialed from Wiley so if you aren’t home you’ll know something serious is happening & can take action.
What if my home loses power or WiFi, can Wiley still make calls?
If WiFi or power go out you will lose the ability to call with Wiley.
That is a really valid concern that we and many parents have. Our mission is to safely connect kids & families & have set out to make that a reality.
We researched this concern early on & found in our research that on average a home in the United States has 99.9% connectivity to power & internet. (On average homes experience outages of power 7 hours/year & WiFi 9 hours/year.)
Every area is different so your experience may be more or less than that but the thing we also want to stress is that with outages there are options. Just like everything in life it really depends on your specific needs & preparedness level.
For instance some people have put together backup options for power like generators or backup connectivity like a secondary connection point like Startlink (satellite) or WiFi home hotspot like Verizon Fios (cellular). Hopefully there are other communications in the home.
At the end of the day we want to give parents options. We want to give families a simple & fun way to connect with each other without having the pressure of getting kids a smartphone too early.
